Letters, 1849-1860.

Letters home written by Payne. The first, dated Oct. 7, 1849, describes his voyage to San Francisco, the city itself, and his mining prospects. Two later letters, dated Dec. 23, 1852 and Jan. 13, 1855 from San Francisco and Butte Ranch, California, describe increasing frustration with bad luck in different business ventures. Accompanied by a letter from William J. Hanford, dated April 9, 1860, informing Payne's family of his death in Utah Territory.
